FKF Shield Cup: Dero FC fancy giant-slaying prospects after drawing Gor Mahia

Dero FC chairman Kevin Oswere has spoken up on the prospect of meeting the record KPL champions, Gor Mahia, in the round of 64 ties.
Speaking after Thursday, January 29, 2026, Oswere said his lowly ranked team will fancy the chance to upset the 2025 finalist.
The record KPL champions have in the past made history in the premier knockout competition and will kick off their campaign keen to make amends after the 2025 final heartbreak at the hands of eventual champions, Nairobi United.
Giant-slayers
“We are concentrating on slaying the giant. It will be a huge match pitting a huge giant against a small one. We want to concentrate on the assignment and delivering this tie. Our approach will be one game at a time,” he stated.

The club official also commented on how the new format of teams being drawn afresh after every stage will bring a new aspect of unpredictability.
“We equally have as many fans as Dero, and I dare say after Gor, AFC Leopards, and Shabana, there is no other team that has huge brand visibility like us. For the new format, I feel it adds more to the uncertainty for teams, with the draw at every stage bringing forth a new challenge for the sides,” he opined.
New incentive for FKF Shield Cup participants
Oswere, who doubles as the FKF chairman for the Siaya County branch, also refuted assertions that the tie can be described as a derby.
“The clash is not a derby. People are referring to it as the Siaya Derby. It is not; Gor Mahia is a Nairobi team wiith strong roots in Nyanza, having transitioned from Luo Union FC,” he clarified.
Gor Mahia is among the 15 KPL sides hungering for glory in the FKF-sanctioned tournament, which comes with a novel financial incentive for the 2026 campaign.
On their part, the Siaya-based club, nicknamed the Granaries, will also be seeking to announce it presence with an upset against Gor mahia possibly the best way to do it.
