Govt flags claims of stopping FKF funding as fake reports
Kenya’s national government, led by Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, has dismissed reports shared in the local media on Thursday, June 4, 2026, claiming that the state has stopped funding the Football Kenya Federation over non-compliance with set regulations as fake news.
The reports, shared by a local sports personality, indicated that the Ministry of Sports had ‘temporarily suspended the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) over alleged misapplication of resources and failure to file financial returns’.

The report added that following the directive, ‘the federation will now be required to independently fund its operations, including the national team’s activities for both local and international assignments’.
However, in a quick rejoinder, PS Elijah Mwangi took to his official Facebook page, flagging the information as untrue.
FKF leadership wrangles
Meanwhile, the development unfolds at the moment when the Football Kenya Federation top leadership is embroiled in an ugly tug of war over alleged funds mismanagement at Goal Project.
The cold war at FKF has also attracted the attention of the global football governing body, FIFA, alongside the Confederation of African Football (CAF). FIFA has since announced plans to send a joint delegation with CAF to Kenya to address ongoing governance and leadership issues within the Football Kenya Federation.
In a letter addressed to FKF President Hussein Mohammed, Vice-President McDonald Mariga, and General Secretary Dennis Gicheru on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, FIFA reiterated the need for all matters affecting the federation’s leadership and administration to be handled strictly in accordance with the FKF Constitution to safeguard the organisation’s stability and proper functioning.
According to FIFA, the planned mission is being organised jointly with CAF and is expected to take place as soon as possible, but no later than June 18, 2026.
The visit aims to provide FIFA and CAF officials with an opportunity to engage directly with FKF National Executive Committee members and gain a comprehensive understanding of the issues currently affecting the federation.
“The purpose of this visit will be to engage directly with the members of the FKF National Executive Committee and to discuss in detail the current situation, with a view to obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the matters at hand and providing appropriate guidance,” the letter stated.
As part of its intervention, FIFA urged members of the FKF National Executive Committee to refrain from holding further meetings or making decisions that could influence the federation’s governance, leadership, or overall stability before the FIFA-CAF mission takes place and discussions are concluded.
