The 2026 Wanda Diamond League heads to Rome on Thursday, June 4, 2026, for the prestigious Golden Gala Pietro Mennea, bringing together some of the world’s biggest athletics names for the season’s fourth meeting.

Among the headline attractions is Africa’s record-holder, Ferdinand Omanyala. American sprint sensations Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Noah Lyles will also be beginning their Diamond League campaigns after impressive performances on the global stage.

The men’s 100m is expected to be one of the highlights of the evening, featuring reigning Olympic champion Noah Lyles against Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, the Olympic 200m gold medallist. The pair renew their growing rivalry following successful 2025 campaigns.

Lyles arrives in Rome after running 9.95 seconds to win in Tokyo last month, while Tebogo will be looking to bounce back after mixed results in recent competitions. However, the race extends beyond the two stars, with Jordan Anthony, Akani Simbine, Ackeem Blake, Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala and Italian favourite Marcell Jacobs all capable of challenging for victory.

Women’s category

In the women’s 200m, world champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden makes her first individual appearance of the season against Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred. It marks the first time the two sprint stars have faced each other over the distance.

Jefferson-Wooden enjoyed a remarkable 2025 campaign, collecting world titles in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. Alfred, who claimed Olympic gold in the 100m in Paris, also enters the contest in strong form after clocking a world-leading 21.86 seconds earlier this year.

The race also includes Britain’s Amy Hunt and Dina Asher-Smith, alongside American Anavia Battle and Nigeria’s Favour Ofili.

Another intriguing event will see Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson compete in the 400m as she begins her outdoor season. The British middle-distance star, who captured the world indoor title earlier this year, faces established one-lap specialists including Natalia Bukowiecka, Lurdes Gloria Manuel, Henriette Jæger and Lieke Klaver.

The hurdles events feature strong international fields. Former world record holder Kendra Harrison lines up against world champion Danielle Williams in the women’s 100m hurdles, while Jamal Britt seeks another victory in the men’s 110m hurdles after triumphs in Shanghai and Xiamen.

Field events

In the field events, shot put fans will witness another battle between Joe Kovacs and Ryan Crouser after Kovacs produced a world-leading 22.58m throw in Rabat. Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri and Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell are also expected to challenge.

The men’s javelin brings together season leader Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, two-time world champion Anderson Peters, Kenya’s veteran Julius Yego, Keshorn Walcott and Jakub Vadlejch.

Olympic pole vault champion Nina Kennedy returns after her victory in Rabat and will once again face Angelica Moser, Molly Caudery and Sandi Morris.

Italy’s supporters will have plenty to cheer for, particularly in the women’s 5000m where Nadia Battocletti returns to a venue that witnessed her national record performance last year. She will compete against a quality field that includes Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu.

The women’s 1500m also promises excitement, with Birke Haylom and Abbey Caldwell renewing their rivalry after sharing victories in previous Diamond League meetings this season.

With Olympic champions, world champions and emerging stars all in action, Rome is set to deliver one of the most competitive Diamond League meetings of the year.
