Ferdinand Omanyala ends 2026 season early after heel injury

Kenyan sprint star Ferdinand Omanyala has brought his 2026 season to a premature end after revealing that a stress fracture in the heel bone of his left foot will prevent him from competing in his final two races of the campaign.
Omanyala made the announcement on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, as he reflected on what had otherwise been a highly encouraging season. The African 100m record holder said the injury was sustained two weeks before the Commonwealth Games and has forced him to withdraw from his remaining assignments.
Despite the disappointing ending, Omanyala has plenty to celebrate. He recorded five consecutive sub-10-second performances during the season and finished third in the Diamond League 100m standings, securing direct qualification for the inaugural Ultimate Championship.
“A season to be proud of. Five consecutive sub-10 performances. Closing the season ranked No. 3 in the Diamond League standings and a direct qualification for the inaugural Ultimate Championship,” Omanyala disclosed.
His 2026 Diamond League campaign included a runner-up finish in Shanghai in 9.98 seconds before he produced one of the highlights of his season by winning the Xiamen 100m in 9.94 seconds. He subsequently clocked 10.11 in Rome and 10.02 in Paris. The official Diamond League profile lists 9.94 as his season’s best in the competition.
The Xiamen victory was particularly significant because it marked Omanyala’s return to the top of a Diamond League meeting after more than two years. His 9.94 also represented his fifth sub-10 performance of the season at that stage.
Omanyala’s overall form had suggested that he was capable of challenging for honours at the business end of the season. His personal best remains the 9.77 seconds he ran in Nairobi in 2021, which remains the African record.
The injury, however, means he will not get the opportunity to compete in the Diamond League Final in Brussels, where he had qualified among the leading eight athletes in the men’s 100m. He will also miss the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship, scheduled for September 11-13.
Omanyala acknowledged that ending the campaign this way was not what he and his team had envisaged, but chose to focus on the positives.
“Not quite the finish we had planned, but there is so much from this season to celebrate and be grateful for.”
The setback follows a difficult Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow, where Omanyala was unable to defend the 100m title he won in 2022 after finishing sixth in his semifinal heat in 10.19 seconds. According to his latest statement, however, the heel injury had already been sustained two weeks before the Games.
The 30-year-old sprinter also used his statement to recognise the people who have supported him throughout the campaign, stressing that his achievements have been the product of a collective effort.
“To my coach, my entire team, my sponsors and partners: Thank you for the work behind the scenes, the belief, the support and for continuing to walk this journey with me. None of these milestones happen alone,” he said.
Omanyala’s decision to end his season early brings the curtain down on a campaign in which he showed a significant return to consistency at elite level. His five straight sub-10 performances, Diamond League ranking and qualification for the new Ultimate Championship provide a positive platform to build on once he has recovered from the injury.
