Nana Owiti raises concern over FKF issues ahead of AFCON 2027

Media personality Nana Owiti has raised concern over several issues affecting Kenyan football, including the delayed FKF Premier League, work permits and alleged unpaid allowances ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a post shared on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, Nana expressed her disappointment over the continued delay in the start of the FKF Premier League, noting that it has now been five weeks without the league getting underway.
She pointed out that the Women’s Premier League has already started, while several other football events have taken place locally, including the Mozart Cup and matches involving Tusker.
Nana questions league delay
Nana also addressed concerns raised by a fan over national team head coach Benny McCarthy not attending local matches, with the fan arguing that his presence would help him identify players for the national team ahead of AFCON 2027.
She said McCarthy had offered some insight into the situation, claiming that the coach had allegedly not been issued with a work permit despite being in the country for about one and a half years.
“Apparently, allegedly, Benny McCarthy hajapewa work permit. It’s been 1.5 years on this tenure,” Nana said.
She further claimed that members of McCarthy’s foreign technical bench were also yet to receive their work permits.
Concerns over players’ allowances
Nana also raised concerns over alleged delays in paying allowances to some national team players.
According to her, some players had reportedly not received allowances for their last four or five camps, leading to a training boycott and threats to raise the matter directly with President William Ruto.
“And I’m just wondering, why does this stop?” Nana questioned, as she called for solutions to the issues affecting Kenyan football.
She said the situation was particularly concerning with AFCON 2027 approaching, especially because several local players have not been playing competitive football due to the delayed league.
Nana also pointed to Kenya’s upcoming match against Eritrea, expressing concern about the players’ match fitness while stressing that the team will still be expected to secure a win.
“I want match fitness. But we want to win,” she said.
Nana urged those involved in Kenyan football to remain calm and focus on finding solutions, noting that time is running out as Kenya prepares to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
