Why Belgut MP has apologised to Uhuru on live TV show

Belgut Member of Parliament Nelson Koech on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, apologised to former President Uhuru Kenyatta for being part of the campaign that carried out a mudslinging campaign before the 2022 General Elections.
Speaking on a local TV station, Koech regretted believing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whom he accused of claiming Uhuru deprived the Mt Kenya region of development projects.
“I am apologising to Uhuru Kenyatta, realising the kind of person Rigathi Gachagua is,” Koech told the local TV station during the morning show.
Contention about projects
Belgut MP, who serves as the chair of the Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations, noted that Gachagua crafted a narrative which was used to discredit Uhuru at the height of the 2022 campaigns, claiming that he never initiated a development project in Mt Kenya region
However, he called out the former second in command for being unfaithful following his change of stance, where he credited Uhuru for initiating development projects in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region during a roadside rally on Monday, March 31, 2025.

“He is saying that the president is going to launch the projects that were initiated by the former president, but during his campaigns, and I wish you could play the clips, he said that there was no a single project Uhuru Kenyatta launched.
“I attended many campaign rallies in Central Kenya, and our rallying call was that the people of Mt Kenya had been deprived by Uhuru Kenyatta of their right to development and Rigathi Gachagua was brutal and lethal in that campaign against Uhuru Kenyatta,” Koech stated.
“Now he is saying that the president is going to launch the projects he said were never initiated by Uhuru Kenyatta, so he is going against his word,” he added.
Gachagua claims
Ahead of Ruto’s Mt Kenya tour, Gachagua made a stop at Redhill, Kiambu County, and addressed residents. The former DP sustained his onslaught against the head of state, claiming that he was a liar, adding that he had not a single project in the central region.

You have heard the president is coming here, he is coming with lies. We want to tell the president that he should be truthful when you come here in Mt Kenya.”
“All the projects here were launched by Uhuru Kenyatta there is no even one of his projects. Therefore, when you come, tell us which projects you have done. Projects here were started by Uhuru Kenyatta and you have refused to complete them, but do not come and lie to Mt Kenya people,” Gachagua stated.
In a quick rebuttal, Ruto said he built a road passing outside Gachagua’s Wamunyoro’s home.
