DCI provides latest update on investigation into Jirongo’s death

The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) on Wednesday, January 21, provided an update on the events that led to the fatal road accident that led to the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament (MP) Cyrus Jirongo.
Through their X account, the DCI stated that their investigations are still ongoing, and they have had the opportunity to take statements from 28 individuals, including seven passengers from the ill-fated bus.
“Further to our statement dated January 5, 2026, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is conducting an inquiry into the Road Traffic Accident (RTA) that claimed the life of the late Hon. Cyrus Jirongo on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. Upon completion, the inquiry file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for appropriate action,” DCI said.
“The inquiry has been wide-ranging and comprehensive, addressing concerns raised both in the public domain and through official investigative channels. Detectives have been conducting an extensive analysis of information obtained from multiple sources and recorded statements from persons of interest.
“To date, statements have been recorded from 28 individuals, including seven passengers from the ill-fated bus who presented themselves to assist in the investigation.”

They further stated that National Assembly speaker Moses Wetangula was among those who recorded statements voluntarily earlier in their investigations.
Cause of death
On top of that, the DCI further stated that detectives have been conducting an extensive analysis of information obtained from multiple sources and recorded statements from persons of interest.
“Others include Rt Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, who voluntarily recorded his statement in the early stages of the investigation; Ms Eunice Chelagat, the wife of Hon. George Khaniri; and a further statement from Hon. George Khaniri himself, a close friend of the late Hon. Jirongo. Hon. Khaniri, together with his wife Eunice, visited the accident scene on the day of the incident and assisted in facilitating the transfer of Hon. Jirongo’s remains from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home.”

“The Inquiry has been wide-ranging and comprehensive, addressing concerns raised both in the public domain and through official investigative channels. Detectives have been conducting an extensive analysis of information obtained from multiple sources and recorded statements from persons of interest,” part of the statement read.

The statement further explained that an autopsy on the deceased’s body revealed that the late had crush chest injuries, a broken sternum with lacerations on the heart, liver and kidneys. The cause of death, according to the pathologist, was multiple crush injuries due to blunt force trauma.
