Migori among 29 counties to receive rainfall on September 17 and 18

Residents in Migori and 28 other counties should expect rainfall in some areas on September 17 and 18, 2026, according to the latest weather forecast.
The Kenya Meteorological Department said rainfall is expected in some parts of Kericho, Kakamega, Nandi, Kisumu, Vihiga, Baringo, Bomet, Homa Bay, Nakuru, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira counties.
Other counties listed in the forecast are Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Nyeri, Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu and Kilifi.
The rainfall forecast covers Thursday, September 17, and Friday, September 18, 2026, with residents in the affected areas likely to experience a mix of sunny and cloudy intervals alongside the expected rainfall.
Strong winds expected
The weather update also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds in parts of several counties during the forecast period.
Winds of more than 25 knots, equivalent to about 12.5 metres per second, are expected over parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir and Tana River.
Other areas expected to experience the strong winds are Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui counties.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions, particularly where strong winds and rainfall could affect outdoor activities.
The forecast comes as different parts of the country continue experiencing varying weather conditions, with rainfall expected mainly in parts of the western, Rift Valley, central and coastal regions.
The Meteorological Department’s forecast highlights the possibility of localised rainfall, meaning conditions may vary from one area to another within the listed counties.
Residents are therefore encouraged to monitor subsequent weather updates for any changes to the forecast as they plan their activities for September 17 and 18.
Preparations for OND rainfall season
The weekly forecast comes as Kenya steps up preparations ahead of the October-December (OND) 2026 rainfall season.
Kenya Met has continued to issue weather updates to support early warning and enable Kenyans and relevant stakeholders to take precautionary measures ahead of possible weather-related hazards.
The meteorological service urged the public to use the forecasts when planning for the coming rains, particularly to protect lives and livelihoods.
Kenya Met noted that the window for preparedness is already open, encouraging communities and other stakeholders to take early action based on available weather information.
“As we prepare for the OND season, the window for preparedness is now. Use weather information to plan ahead, protect lives and livelihoods, and take action before hazards occur,” Kenya Met said.
