Saturday weather: Kenya Met predicts dry conditions dominating as gusty winds hit select regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department has outlined what Kenyans should expect as they head out on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
According to the department, most parts of the country are expected to remain generally dry, offering favourable conditions for outdoor plans across many towns. However, brief showers and localised thunderstorms will still affect specific regions.
In Nairobi, residents will wake up to cool conditions with early temperatures dropping to 14°C. Morning hours in the capital will feature cloudy conditions with a chance of light rains over few places combined with sunny intervals, before giving way to maximum afternoon temperatures of 24°C.
Coastal counties including Mombasa, Kwale, and Kilifi will record daytime highs of 29°C, with light showers expected over few places and sunny intervals in the morning before clearing later in the afternoon.
Showers and afternoon thunderstorms in Western regions
While dry weather takes centre stage nationally, rainfall will touch down in specific counties. The department notes that rainfall is expected in parts of Kericho, Kakamega, Vihiga, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Murang’a, Meru, Embu, Mombasa, Lamu, Kilifi, and Kwale.
Western Kenya and parts of the Rift Valley are set for wet afternoon conditions. In counties such as Kakamega and Bungoma, the forecaster projects “Sunny intervals, moderate showers and thunderstorms expected over few places” in the afternoon, accompanied by highs of 28°C to 29°C.
Neighbouring areas like Kisumu, Busia, and Siaya will experience similar afternoon activity alongside temperatures of 28°C to 30°C.
Strong winds predicted in northern and coastal areas
Beyond rain forecasts, strong atmospheric currents are expected across several counties.
The bulletin indicates that “Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots” will sweep across parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kitui counties.
Temperature extremes will vary widely across the country. Turkana and Mandera will record the highest temperatures at 36°C, while Nyandarua in the central highlands stays the coolest, with night temperatures dropping to 9°C.
