El Niño in Kenya: Weatherman reveals what Kenyans should expect in coming months

The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) has revealed what Kenyans should expect in the coming months as the country prepares for the October–December (OND) 2026 rainfall season amid evolving El Niño conditions.
The weather agency, in a statement shared on Friday, September 11, 2026, said it is closely monitoring the evolving weather and climate situation and will continue providing timely forecasts, advisories and updates to help Kenyans prepare for possible weather-related impacts.
No cause for panic
Kenya Met has also urged Kenyans to prepare early and remain alert as the OND season approaches, while cautioning against panic.
“There is no cause for panic, but there is every reason to prepare early, remain alert and follow verified government and KMSA advisories,” the agency said.
Kenya Met said the public should rely on verified information from the government and the meteorological agency as the weather situation continues to evolve.
The agency will continue monitoring weather and climate conditions and issuing authoritative, science-based early warning information to the government, counties, partners, the media and the public.
Preparedness
According to the weatherman, the government is strengthening coordination through the National Crisis Communication Standing Committee (NCCSC) to ensure accurate, timely, verified and actionable information reaches Kenyans early enough to support informed decisions and early action.
Kenya Met, through Acting Director General Edward Muriuki, continues to provide the technical meteorological leadership and expertise required to support the national preparedness effort.
“Our role is clear: to ensure that reliable meteorological information reaches those who need it, early enough to act,” Weatherman said.
As the OND season approaches, Kenya Met said it will work with national and county governments, humanitarian and development partners, the media and other stakeholders to strengthen the link between early warning, early action and reduced risk.
The agency emphasised that preparedness would be key in reducing the potential impacts of the evolving El Niño conditions.
“We cannot control the El Niño phenomenon, but we can reduce its impacts through timely information, preparedness and early action,” Weatherman added.
El Niño conditions
The latest preparedness message comes as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns that El Niño could intensify into a very strong event, increasing the risk of extreme weather in some parts of the world.
The UN weather agency has also said there is a nearly 100 per cent likelihood that El Niño will continue through February 2027.
However, WMO has cautioned that the local impacts of the phenomenon may differ depending on location and other climate conditions.
For Kenya, the weatherman’s latest message places emphasis on early preparation, reliable information and following official advisories as the country heads into the OND rainfall season.
