Kenya Met: Thursday to stay mostly dry, with rain expected in parts of western and central Kenya

Most of the country should enjoy a dry Thursday, but if you live in the west, central highlands or along the Rift, keep an umbrella close by.
The Kenya Meteorological Department’s forecast, valid from 9 pm Wednesday to 9 pm on Thursday, September 10, 2026, notes that most parts of the country are expected to remain generally dry, though several counties will see rain and a few will battle strong winds.
Rain and wind to watch out for
Kericho, Kakamega, Kisumu, Siaya, Busia, Vihiga, Homa Bay, Migori, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Nandi, Bomet, Narok, Kisii, Nyamira, Meru, Embu and Nyandarua counties should all expect rain at some point during the day.
The rain isn’t new. In the 24 hours to September 9, Kisii recorded close to 13.5mm, while Koyoo station in Migori logged the highest amount countrywide, at roughly 15.5mm.
Further east and north, it’s the wind that needs attention. The department warns of “strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s)” blowing across Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui counties.
Boat operators and anyone travelling through these areas should plan around it.
Temperature-wise, Mandera and Turkana will be the hottest counties, both hitting highs of 36 degrees Celsius. On the other end, Nyandarua, Laikipia and Elgeyo Marakwet will be the coldest, with night temperatures dropping to 10 degrees.
What to expect in Nairobi and other major towns
Nairobi residents can look forward to a cool, partly cloudy night, a cloudy start with sunny intervals in the morning, and clear sunny spells by afternoon. Temperatures in the capital will range between 14 and 22 degrees. The sun will rise at 6:26 am and set at 6:32 pm.
Mombasa stays partly cloudy overnight, with light showers likely in a few spots come morning before clearing to sunny intervals in the afternoon. Expect highs of 29 degrees.
Kisumu should reach 30 degrees with a chance of light showers, while Nakuru and Eldoret will see cooler, mostly sunny conditions typical of the highlands.
