Kenya Met predicts dry conditions, isolated showers and night chills till Sep 14

The Kenya Meteorological Department has released its seven-day weather outlook valid from September 8, 2026, to September 14, 2026.
According to the advisory issued on September 7, 2026, most parts of the country are expected to be generally dry. However, scattered rainfall and wide regional temperature variations will feature across several counties during the period.
Expected rainfall and regional heat
While dry weather dominates the national outlook, the weather authority indicates that some parts of Lamu, Kilifi, Tana River, Mombasa, Kwale, Narok and Bomet Counties are likely to receive rainfall.
Morning showers are expected in several coastal areas, including Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, and Lamu Counties. By afternoon, showers and thunderstorms will affect parts of the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley counties, including Kisumu, Kericho, Kakamega, Bomet, and Nakuru.
Central Highlands regions, alongside Nairobi, Kiambu, and Nyeri, are likely to experience afternoon showers.
Daytime heat will remain pronounced across coastal, northern, and eastern Kenya. The bulletin notes that “daytime (maximum) average temperatures of more than 30°C are expected several counties including Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit and Turkana”.
Town-specific data indicates Mandera reaching a peak maximum temperature of 38.0°C, closely followed by Lodwar at 37.0°C, Garissa and Wajir at 36.0°C, and Kisumu at 34.0°C. Nairobi will record a maximum daytime temperature of 29.0°C.
Chilly nights and previous weather review
In contrast to daytime heat, night-time temperatures will drop significantly in high-altitude areas. The agency forecasts that “night-time (minimum) average temperatures are expected to be less than 10°C in some parts of Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Taita/Taveta and Kajiado Counties”.
Nyahururu will record the lowest night temperature at 4.0°C, while Kitale drops to 7.0°C and Narok to 8.0°C. Nairobi, Eldoret, and Laikipia are expected to record minimum temperatures of 10.0°C.
This weather pattern follows the review period between August 31, 2026, and September 6, 2026, during which most parts of the country remained dry.
The report states that “Mandera Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature: 38.4°C on 6th September 2026,” while “Nyahururu Meteorological Station recorded the lowest daily minimum temperature: 4.4°C on 1st September 2026”.
The automatic weather station at Kibabii University in Bungoma County recorded the highest seven-day total rainfall of 90.3 mm, as well as the highest daily rainfall of 41.8 mm on September 4, 2026.
