30km of Mogotio-Lake Bogoria road done as govt gives update on Baringo-Nakuru road

Travelers and traders moving across Baringo and Nakuru counties are set for smoother journeys as the government makes progress on upgrading the 78-kilometre Kamukunji-Kisanana-Kipkitur-Mugurin-Lake Bogoria-Mogotio Loop Road.
According to an update published by the State Department for Roads on September 7, 2026, contractors have completed 30 km of the 38-km stretch connecting Mogotio to Lake Bogoria.
Aerial photos shared by the department show a freshly paved bitumen surface slicing through agricultural fields and sisal plantations that were previously difficult to navigate during heavy rains.
Opening up trade and tourism
The road project is expected to bring relief to farmers, traders, and motorists along the Rift Valley route.
Once fully finished, the new tarmac will “ease the movement of agricultural produce and livestock, reduce travel time and transport costs, connect communities to wider markets, and strengthen access to the Lake Bogoria tourism circuit,” according to the State Department for Roads.
For years, locals transporting farm produce or livestock to markets across Nakuru and Baringo faced long delays and high vehicle maintenance costs due to rough dirt roads.
The new bitumen surface shortens transit times, allowing farmers to deliver fresh goods to market centres efficiently, while giving local businesses better access to regional trading hubs.
A major boost for rural infrastructure
The project, designated under route numbers D160 and C577, is being executed under Contract No. RWC 609. Project signage on-site confirms that the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) is overseeing the design and supervision, with full funding provided by the Government of Kenya.
Beyond supporting local agriculture, the completed loop will make it easier for visitors to reach Lake Bogoria, a major tourist destination known for its hot springs and flamingo populations.
By linking Kamukunji, Kisanana, Kipkitur, Mugurin, Lake Bogoria, and Mogotio, the upgraded corridor creates a continuous loop that connects the rural towns directly to the broader transport network.
