KURA announces partial 3-hour closure of Outer Ring Road on Saturday

Motorists who rely on Outer Ring Road in Nairobi will face temporary traffic disruptions on Saturday, September 5, 2026, as the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) prepares to remove a large overhead gantry structure along the highway.
The roads agency issued an official advisory on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, urging drivers to plan their journeys around a three-hour work schedule.
The routine engineering operation will affect a key section of the road during the early afternoon, with full closures enforced for part of the duration.
“Motorists are informed of a partial closure of Outer Ring Road on Saturday, 5th September 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., to facilitate removal of a gantry at the location indicated in the attached sketch. We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” KURA stated in the public notice.
Sequence of roadwork activities
A site layout diagram released alongside the alert shows that the three-hour exercise will proceed in three distinct phases.
Between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm, contractors will set up heavy machinery and position equipment on site. Traffic movement along the stretch will be kept minimal, with vehicles permitted to pass at restricted speeds.
The main dismantling of the massive gantry frame takes place between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm. The affected section of Outer Ring Road will be completely closed to all traffic during this hour to guarantee public safety.
Demobilisation will then follow from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, during which vehicles will again pass through under speed restrictions before full operations resume.

Photographs provided by KURA pinpoint the overhead steel framework slated for removal.
The metal gantry currently supports large green directional signboards for Exit 7 and route C53, guiding traffic bound for Mombasa Road, Thika Road, Donholm, and the Nairobi central business district.
The accompanying technical sketch places the active working zone along Outer Ring Road just before the Airport North Road junction and the Ngong River bridge.
KURA has indicated that traffic marshals and road closure signs will be stationed on site to direct drivers.
Commuters heading toward Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or connecting through Jogoo Road, Juja Road, and Manyanja Road are advised to leave early or use alternative routes during the disruption.
