KeNHA announces 13-hour Mombasa Road closure for footbridge construction

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary traffic disruption along Mombasa Road (A8), affecting motorists using the Nairobi-bound carriageway between Airtel Complex and General Motors.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, June 18, 2026, KeNHA said the affected section of the busy highway will be temporarily closed to traffic to allow for the installation of fabricated footbridge beams for the Airtel Footbridge.
The authority said the closure will take place from Saturday, June 27, 2026, to Sunday, June 28, 2026, with the disruption scheduled to run overnight from 9:00 pm to 10:00 am.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority wishes to notify the public that a section of the Nairobi-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road (A8), between Airtel Complex and General Motors, will be temporarily closed to traffic,” KeNHA said in the notice.
KeNHA advised motorists using the route to plan their journeys early and follow the provided traffic management arrangements during the closure period.
“This is to allow for the installation of the fabricated footbridge beams of the Airtel Footbridge across the Nairobi-bound carriageway,” the authority wrote.
The authority also urged drivers to cooperate with traffic police officers and marshals who will be deployed at the site to help manage movement and guide motorists through the affected area.
The affected stretch is part of the busy Mombasa Road corridor, which serves thousands of motorists daily, including commuters travelling between Nairobi and areas along the eastern side of the city.
KeNHA said the measures are aimed at ensuring the footbridge installation works are carried out safely while minimising disruption to road users.
“KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan below and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” it added.

Expired transport permits
At the time, the authority said it had been overwhelmed by a surge in applications after the portal went live, forcing its teams to work around the clock to process requests and improve system performance.
KeNHA subsequently pushed the application deadline to June 19, 2026, to ease pressure on transporters and prevent delays in cargo movement across the country.
“Since the portal went live, the Authority has received a high volume of permit applications. Our team of verifiers and approvers is working around the clock to clear them, alongside the simultaneous system optimisation and resource allocation. To prevent delays and facilitate the application and approval of permits, the Authority has granted a further extension of 10 days, as follows: i. Trucks with expired permits: an extension has been granted for the cargo described in the permit. The extension is valid until 19th June 2026,” the notice read in part.
