Millicent Omanga opens up on her days hawking clothes from a car boot

Nairobi politician Millicent Omanga has opened up about her early days in business, revealing that she started by hawking clothes and other items from the boot of her car before she had a shop.
The businesswoman said selling from a car was her first experience in business. She explained that she would carry her stock in the boot, fill it with items and sometimes move around selling them to customers.
“When I started business ya kwanza kabisa, kabla sijakua na duka, nilikua nauza nguo, nilikua nauza kwa boot, yaani vitu zangu ninge hawk kwa boot,” Millicent Omanga said on Thursday, September 10, while on an interview with Oga Obinna.
She explained that clothes were among the main items she sold during those early days. She also dealt in several household items as she worked to grow her business before eventually having a shop.

“Mimi nishauza nguo, nimeuza nguo…nimeuza, vitu vyote hivo. Particularly nguo, na vitu vya nyumba nyingi,” Omanga said.
From a car boot to other ventures
Omanga said her approach at the time was simple, with the car serving as the place where she kept her stock as she went out to sell. She described how she would keep adding items to the boot before taking them out to customers.
“Lakini nilianza kuuza kwa gari. Like I could carry kwa boot, najaza najaza na nauza,” Omanga said.
Her comments offer a look at the beginning of her business journey, before she had a physical shop. She said hawking from the car was part of the work she did when she was starting in business.

Omanga has also spoken about her weight loss journey, saying it has been ongoing since around 2023. She explained that her current eating routine involves having two meals a day and measuring the food she eats.
“It has been a journey. From around…from 2023. Nakula mara mbili kwa siku,” Omanga said.
She said her first meal is taken at noon and consists of one boiled egg, avocado and black coffee. At 5 pm, she said she eats meat and vegetables, with the portions measured using a weighing scale.
“My first meal at noon, I take one boiled egg na avocado na black coffee. Then at 5 pm I eat nyama like 80g, then veggies like 150g. Ehh napima, weighing scale muhimu,” Omanga said.
