KeNHA orders removal of illegal structures along Kisii–Ahero (A1) Road within 30 days
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a public notice directing all illegal roadside occupants, traders, and unauthorised structures along the Kisii–Ahero (A1) Road to vacate and remove their structures within 30 days, in a fresh push to reclaim road reserves and improve highway safety.
In the notice dated May 28, 2026, the authority stated that all wares, makeshift stalls, permanent and semi-permanent structures placed within the road reserve must be cleared by the set deadline, warning that enforcement action will follow immediately after the expiry period.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) hereby notifies all illegal roadside occupants, including traders and unauthorised structures along the Kisii – Ahero (A1) Road, to remove their wares and vacate the road reserve within thirty (30) days from the date of this notice,” the notice read in part.
KeNHA said the exercise is part of its ongoing road safety improvement programme aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring smooth, unobstructed traffic flow along major highways across the country.
The authority noted that encroachment on road reserves has continued to pose safety risks to motorists and pedestrians, as well as interfere with planned infrastructure expansion and maintenance works.
According to the notice, affected traders and operators have up to June 27, 2026, to comply voluntarily, after which the authority will move in to demolish all remaining illegal structures in line with the relevant laws governing road reserves.
“The project is part of the Authority’s ongoing road safety improvement initiative that seeks to reduce accidents and ensure the unobstructed flow of traffic along the Highway,” the notice added.

KeNHA further emphasised that the clearance applies to all unauthorised developments along both sides of the Kisii–Ahero (A1) Road, including temporary stalls, buildings, billboards, directional signs, and any other unapproved installations.
The authority warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe will result in forceful removal, as it seeks to enforce discipline and restore order along the highway corridor.
“All affected traders are urged to comply within the stipulated timeframe upon the expiry of this notice, on June 27, 2026, to avoid enforcement action in accordance with the relevant laws governing road reserves,” KeNHA added.
