KeNHA orders removal of all roadside developments from James Gichuru to JKIA

Kenya National Highways Authority has issued a 14-day ultimatum to owners of roadside developments alongside the James Gichuru sections all the way to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

In a notice published on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, in MyGov, KeNHA announced that developments include billboards, direction, and advertisement signs.

In addition, the authority further announced that other developments, such as tree nursery beds and temporary structures, should be removed from the highway.

According to KeNHA, the move to remove the roadside developments is set to kick-start the enhancement of landscaping and beautification works between James Gishuru and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport section.

“This is to notify all roadside developments owners/operators (billboards, direction and advertisement signs, nursery beds and temporary structures) within James Gichuru Road Junction to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (A8/B10) Highway of the commencement of capacity enhancement landscaping and beautification works between this section,” KeNHA said.

Likewise, KeNHA has ordered the owners of the listed roadside developments to remove them within fourteen days from the date of the Notice.

On the other hand, KeNHA has warned that failure to remove them will lead to removal without further reference to the owner or the operators.

“Consequently, all roadside developments (billboards, direction and advertisement signs, tree nursery beds and temporary structures) within the said road reserve should be removed within 14 days from the date of this Notice to pave way for implementation of the project works, otherwise they shall be removed without further reference the owner/operators,” KeNHA said.

Billboard removal

This follows the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) issuing a 30-day ultimatum to all billboard owners with unauthorised or non-compliant structures along major highways.

In a notice issued in the latest MyGov publication on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, the authority announced a rising concern about the encroachment of structures along National Highways.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has noted with concern the continued encroachment onto road reserves along National Highways,” KeNHA stated.

Amid the encroachment of various structures, KeNHA has announced its mandate to remove any illegal structures, billboard advertisements, and directional signs within the KeNHA road reserves.

“Under the Kenya Roads Act, 2007 (Sections 49 & 50), KeNHA is mandated to control roadside developments and remove any illegal structures, billboards, advertisements, and directional signs within the KeNHA road reserves,” KeNHA said.

KeNHA has therefore maintained that any persons with illegal structures, businesses, or developments, including unapproved and unrenewed billboards, advertisements, and directional signs on road reserves, should take them down within thirty days from Tuesday, November 25, 2025.

“All persons with illegal structures, businesses, and developments, including unapproved and unrenewed billboards, advertisements, and directional signs on road reserves, are hereby required to remove them within thirty (30) days from the date of this notice,” KeNHA noted.
