Linet Toto salutes women shaping society in moving International Women’s Day message
Bomet County Woman Representative Linet Toto has celebrated the achievements, strength, and leadership of women across Kenya and around the world in a sweet International Women’s Day message.
In the statement shared on her Facebook on Sunday, March 8, 2026, Toto emphasised the vital role women continue to play in shaping communities, nurturing families, and leading positive change.
She highlighted that women’s voices, ideas, and determination are critical in building a stronger, more inclusive society.
“Today we join the world in marking International Women’s Day, a moment to celebrate the achievements, strength, and leadership of women in every corner of our society,” she wrote.
The Bomet County lawmaker called for the continued empowerment of women and girls, urging communities to uplift them and create opportunities for them to realise their full potential.
She described International Women’s Day as a moment to honour women not only for their contributions in public life but also for the often-unseen efforts in homes, schools, and workplaces that sustain society.
“Women continue to play a powerful role in shaping our communities, nurturing families, and leading positive change. Their voices, ideas, and determination are essential in building a stronger and more inclusive future,” she said.

Toto’s message also acknowledged the ongoing challenges women face, underscoring the importance of recognising their leadership and resilience in the face of social, economic, and cultural barriers. She encouraged both women and men to support initiatives that strengthen women’s participation in decision-making and leadership roles at every level.
“As we celebrate this day, may we continue to uplift and empower every woman and girl to realise their full potential,” she wrote.
The Bomet County Woman Representative further wished women peace, growth, and success, and called on all to celebrate the achievements of women while continuing to advocate for equality and inclusion.
“Happy International Women’s Day,” she added.

Calls for dignity
Speaking during activities organised to commemorate the day on Sunday, March 8, 2026, participants highlighted the importance of creating environments where women can contribute meaningfully in their communities, workplaces and leadership spaces without fear of harassment or intimidation.
This year’s International Women’s Day is being observed under the global theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls”, which emphasises the need to safeguard women’s rights and expand opportunities for women and girls everywhere.
Diana Mercy, the Western Chapter Convenor of the Women in Justice Centre, said International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in advancing women’s rights while also recognising areas that still need attention.
She noted that women play a crucial role in community development and should be supported and respected for the contributions they make in different sectors.
“Our call to action is that women should always be treated with dignity and respect for the work they are doing in their communities and leadership spaces,” Mercy said.
Mercy added that women’s organisations and community groups continue to work together to ensure women feel supported, empowered and confident in pursuing opportunities that benefit both their families and society.
She also pointed out that technology has brought new opportunities for connection and engagement, but it has also created challenges such as online harassment, which women and girls sometimes experience in digital spaces.
Caren Omanga, convenor of the Nyando Social Justice Centre, said the day serves as an important reminder that women deserve equal chances to grow, succeed and participate in activities that shape their communities.
“When women step forward to serve their communities, they should be supported and encouraged. Women can make a meaningful difference,” she said.
