Charlene Ruto has opened up about how she handles public scrutiny over her life, dressing and remarks as the daughter of President William Ruto.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday, August 23, 2026, Charlene acknowledged that growing up in a highly public family has meant having different aspects of her life closely watched and analysed by the public.

She said people are entitled to their opinions but has learned not to allow criticism to affect her personally.

Life in spotlight

Charlene said she understands why people pay attention to her, given her position as the President’s daughter.

“I think people are entitled to their opinions, which is fine,” she said.

She explained that she makes personal choices based on what feels right for her rather than how they might be received by the public.

“If I’ve dressed a particular way, it’s how I wanted to dress for the day. It’s how I wanted to look,” Charlene said.

She added that the same approach applies when she speaks publicly.

“If I said a particular thing, that was what was on my heart or my mind to share,” she said.

Handling criticism

Charlene said she does not allow either positive or negative reactions from the public to dictate how she lives her life.

She acknowledged that people have the freedom to criticise or analyse her actions, but said she has developed a way of keeping such opinions from affecting her emotionally.

“So I think people are free to criticise, people are free to, you know, analyse what I say, but I don’t let it get to my heart,” she said.

Charlene said she applies the same mindset regardless of whether the public reaction is favourable or negative.

“Whether it is good, whether it is bad,” she added.

Her remarks come as she continues to navigate life in the public eye, where her appearances, statements and activities often attract attention.

Charlene said being part of a prominent political family comes with public interest, but she does not believe it should prevent her from making her own choices.

She maintained that how she dresses and what she chooses to say are personal decisions, even when they attract public commentary.
