Kisumu leaders fire warning to predators as world marks International Women’s Day

Women leaders and human rights advocates in Kisumu joined the rest of the world in marking International Women’s Day with renewed calls for dignity, safety and equal opportunities for women and girls in all areas of life.

Speaking during activities organised to commemorate the day on Sunday, March 8, 2026, participants highlighted the importance of creating environments where women can contribute meaningfully in their communities, workplaces and leadership spaces without fear of harassment or intimidation.

This year’s International Women’s Day is being observed under the global theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls”, which emphasises the need to safeguard women’s rights and expand opportunities for women and girls everywhere.

Diana Mercy, the Western Chapter Convenor of the Women in Justice Centre, said International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in advancing women’s rights while also recognising areas that still need attention.

She noted that women play a crucial role in community development and should be supported and respected for the contributions they make in different sectors.

“Our call to action is that women should always be treated with dignity and respect for the work they are doing in their communities and leadership spaces,” Mercy said.

Mercy added that women’s organisations and community groups continue to work together to ensure women feel supported, empowered and confident in pursuing opportunities that benefit both their families and society.

She also pointed out that technology has brought new opportunities for connection and engagement, but it has also created challenges such as online harassment, which women and girls sometimes experience in digital spaces.

Caren Omanga, convenor of the Nyando Social Justice Centre, said the day serves as an important reminder that women deserve equal chances to grow, succeed and participate in activities that shape their communities.

She encouraged communities to support women who show interest in leadership, business and other areas that contribute to social and economic development.

“When women step forward to serve their communities, they should be supported and encouraged. Women can make a meaningful difference,” she said.

Omanga also emphasised the importance of mentorship, noting that experienced women leaders can play a vital role in guiding and inspiring younger women who are beginning their journeys in leadership and community service.

Harriet Ondiek from the Haki Kwetu Social Justice Centre said International Women’s Day is also a moment to celebrate the resilience and determination shown by women in overcoming challenges.

She observed that many women continue to balance family responsibilities, careers and community work while striving to improve their lives and those of others around them.

Ondiek encouraged women to remain confident and continue pursuing opportunities that allow them to contribute to the development of their communities.

“Women should come out in large numbers and participate in activities that build their communities and empower others,” she said.

Sylvia Leiyan, Technical Lead for Partnerships and Community Engagement at the Independent Medico Legal Unit, said protecting the safety and well-being of women and girls remains a shared responsibility for institutions, organisations and communities.

She stressed that promoting safe environments allows women and girls to fully participate in social, economic and leadership activities.

Leiyan added that collaboration among community organisations, institutions and citizens is essential in creating spaces where women can thrive and achieve their potential.

As the world commemorates International Women’s Day, women in Kisumu expressed hope that continued advocacy, support and awareness will help strengthen the rights, safety and opportunities available to women and girls across the country.
