Police officers have arrested three people and recovered a loaded firearm in Samburu County.

In a statement on Sunday, December 29, 2024, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stated that three individuals had been taken into custody in connection with a spate of robberies in the Dore area of Samburu.

“Three notorious robbery with violence suspects who have eluded law enforcement officers for weeks have finally been arrested. The investigation culminated in the recovery of a G3 rifle, a critical weapon linked to their string of violent crimes,” DCI said.

Trio in custody

The officers revealed that the ambush of the three took a multi-agency approach and coordination with police reservists and officers at the Archers Police Post, leading to the recovery of a G3 rifle, serial number A3-9796032, loaded with two rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

DCI further stated that two other suspected accomplices were on the run and that officers were hot on their pursuit.

“Now, with the trio awaiting processing in police custody, the wheels of justice are set in motion. Meanwhile, law enforcement officers remain hot on the trail of two additional suspects who are still at large,” DCI added.

Bags of stolen rice

The Samburu arrest comes just days after detectives discovered dozens of bags of rice which were stolen from a truck driver while in transit.

In their statement on December 24, 2024, DCI revealed that 129 of the 500 bags which were stolen from the truck had been recovered at a home in Makindu.

“Detectives in Kibwezi, Makueni County have recovered 129 bags of rice earlier stolen while on transit from Mombasa, when a truck driver was accosted by highway robbers at the Machinery area of Kambu on December 21,” DCI narrated.

“Reporting the incident at Makindu Police Station, the driver alleged to have been overpowered by the gang that emerged riding on motorcycles, who after assaulting him commandeered the loaded truck before dumping him around Makindu.”

One of the suspects in the incident is reported to have escaped a police dragnet together with his wife after getting wind of his impending arrest.
