Wamalwa says Murang’a altercation was an assassination attempt on DCP leaders

DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa has claimed that the violent altercation involving police officers and leaders allied to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) in Murang’a on July 27, 2025, was an assassination attempt.
Speaking during an interview on K24 TV on Monday, July 28, 2025, Wamalwa recounted the incident in which bullets were fired at vehicles carrying some of the allies of Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua shortly after a church service at AIPCA Christ the King Church in Kahuro, Kigumo Constituency.
“What is most disturbing is that the police have now resorted to using live bullets, not rubber bullets as is expected for crowd control, maybe during protests. When a police bullet is fired from a gun and it hits a human being, it kills,” Wamalwa said.
Targeted attack
Wamalwa reported that nine bullets struck the DCP convoy, with some bullets still lodged in the vehicles after the attack.
“We thank God that, although those vehicles were shot at, no one was killed,” he stated.
When pressed by the interviewer on whether he believed the incident amounted to an assassination attempt, Wamalwa responded unequivocally, claiming the gunfire was deliberately aimed at areas where political leaders typically sit in their vehicles.
“It was an assassination attempt. Because when you look at where the bullets were aimed, they were targeting where the Honourable Member usually sits—back left. One of the bullets even hit near the fuel tank,” he explained.

Wamalwa further disclosed that they have reported the incident to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), providing evidence of the bullet holes and the recovered ammunition.
“Today, we went to IPOA and showed the chairperson and the commissioners the bullets that were fired, about nine bullets. The bullets are still lodged in the vehicles of the Honourable Members,” he added.
Muranga incident
According to footage shared online, the chaos erupted after the church service attended by DCP leaders, including Nyandarua Senator John Methu, who had planned to hold rallies in the area.
However, their rally plans were thwarted by police, resulting in tear gas being deployed to disperse the group. In the ensuing melee, Senator Methu and his convoy were forced to flee on foot.

Speaking after the incident, Methu condemned the police’s use of excessive force, including live ammunition, targeting their group without provocation.
“Police officers who appeared to be under very clear instructions have attacked us at Ngonda, Kigumo Constituency and used live ammunition on my vehicle, forcing us to escape on foot. Listen, Mr. William Samoei Ruto, no amount of violence and police brutality shall change our WanTam resolve,” Methu declared.
