Chelsea and Manchester City agree Ksh21B transfer deal for Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea and Manchester City have agreed on a Ksh21 billion transfer deal for Argentinian midfielder Enzo Fernandez. The agreement came on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, hours before the closure of the English Premier League transfer window.
Chelsea had initially been reluctant to approve Enzo Fernández’s transfer to Manchester City as they wanted to secure a replacement in midfield first.
However, City’s agreement to a deal worth up to £125 million (approximately Ksh21.6 billion) has persuaded the Blues to sanction Fernández’s departure, even though they have no certainty that they will bring in another midfielder.
Chelsea still have several hours to explore possible options after seeing their attempt to sign Lamine Camara rejected.
Despite that setback, the London club eventually concluded that allowing Fernández to leave was the right decision, particularly after the Argentine made his desire to move on clear.
Chelsea remain confident in the strength of their squad whether or not they complete another signing before the transfer window closes. The club will continue assessing the market before deciding whether to make any further moves.
Transfer deadline
Chelsea had given Manchester City until 5:00 pm on Friday, August 14, 2026, to submit an offer for Enzo Fernandez if they want to sign the midfielder before the summer transfer window closes.
Chelsea had value the Argentina international at £120 (Ksh20.9 billion) million after an impressive World Cup campaign, and made it clear that they will not consider selling him this summer if City fail to meet their asking price.
Fernandez had six years remaining on his Chelsea contract, placing the Blues in a strong negotiating position as City weighed up whether to make a formal approach.
Manchester City’s interest in the midfielder is understood to be partly influenced by his previous relationship with former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca, who left Stamford Bridge before taking charge at the Etihad this summer.
The situation had become more significant because of uncertainty surrounding City midfielder Rodri, who joined Barcelona. Rodri, 30, had entered the final year of his contract, although City were keen to retain the Spain international.
