Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, ordered a probe into the cause of the fire that broke out at the county’s bus station, leaving property of unknown value destroyed.

In a statement, the county boss confirmed the fire started in the afternoon but a swift intervention from the firefighting team prevented further destruction of property and the safety of other park users.

“My attention has been drawn to the unfortunate fire incident reported this afternoon at the Narok Bus Park. Our fire engines responded swiftly and successfully contained the fire, preventing further damage to property and ensuring the safety of park users,” the statement read in part.

Was it caused by defiance?

In his statement, Governor Ntutu raised critical questions regarding the cause of the afternoon fire.

He noted that while commissioning the Narok Bus Station, he issued a directive prohibiting eateries from cooking food on-site. Ntutu indicated that he ordered them to sell only ready-made food.

However, he wondered why gas cylinders were found in some of the stalls razed down by the afternoon fire.

While announcing the launch of the probe, Governor Ntutu directed the officers to give special attention to establishing why the gas cylinders were in some of the stalls.

Nonetheless, he challenged the residents to prioritise their safety and prevent the re-occurrence of a similar incident.

“This incident raises important questions about the safety measures and precautions businesses operating within the bus park are taking to protect themselves and other park users.

“When I commissioned the bus park, I issued a directive prohibiting eateries from preparing meals within the park. We advised that meals be prepared elsewhere and only brought to the stalls for sale,” the statement read in part.

“We have commenced investigations to determine the cause of the fire and to establish how the gas cylinders found their way into the bus park. Let us prioritize safety at all times to prevent avoidable disasters,” it added.

By the time of this publication, Governor Ntutu had not given a full account of the losses incurred following the afternoon fire incident.
