Karua: I have a chance to be Kenya’s president in 2027

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has exuded confidence that she has an opportunity of winning the 2027 presidential elections, ascending to the top office.
In an interview on a local Radio station on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Karua said she has already received the green light from the PLP to seek the top seat.

“I look ahead at the possibilities ahead of me, and there is an election coming in 2027. Therefore, there is a chance for me to be the Chief Executive Officer of Kenya, aka President,” she stated.
“I have already declared, and I have been given the go-ahead by the People’s Liberation Party. My duty is to work hard to market myself and the ideals of the PLP so that I become the flag bearer and run for President.”
This comes even as the united opposition continues to deliberate on who will flagbearer to contest against President William Ruto’s re-election bid.

Meanwhile, the Wiper Patriotic Front Party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, has also been endorsed by his camp to run for the country’s top seat as the Democracy for Citizens (DCP) Party boss Rigathi Gachagua, maintains that he is the sole opposition leader capable of unseating Ruto in the 2027 contest.

Moreover, Karua insisted that her focus is on the future rather than missed political opportunities, ramping up the call for good governance to address national problems such as the debt crisis.
“You cannot talk of public debt without first talking of governance, because that is how we get there. To stop or address debt, you need to improve governance. Everything rests on governance,” she said.
As the clock continues to tick ahead of the 2027 polls, the unity and strategy of the opposition will be on a litmus test, as any slight division will play to the advantage of Ruto’s reelection plan.

On his part, despite the growing speculation of its future, Gachagua brushed off claims of internal divisions within the opposition, insisting that the leaders are united in purpose.
“There may be a little difference among leaders in the way they look at things, but those leaders are not the opposition. The opposition are the people of Kenya, and they are united to a man, to a man,” he asserted.
Gachagua emphasised that the grassroots movement sweeping across the country, which he referred to as the Wantam movement, is not only alive but growing stronger across the regions.
The Democracy for Citizens (DCP ) Party boss sought to clarify the role of political leaders in the ongoing wave of civic opposition, arguing that leaders are only there to offer direction, not define the movement.
“We, the leaders, are just a reflection of the people, but we are not the people,” he stated. “We are not the opposition. The opposition are the people of Kenya,” he said.
