Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed has declared that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will never again find itself in the opposition, stating the party’s strategic focus is on being part of the government at all times.

Speaking on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at CCI church service in Narok County, Junet emphasised that ODM’s political direction is firmly set on forming or joining the next government, either independently or through strategic coalitions.

Huko mbele hakuna siku ODM itakuwa opposition. Wale wanaotaka kuturudisha watafute njia ingine. ODM will be either in government or a coalition that will form the government,” he declared.

His remarks come amid growing concerns over the position of ODM leader Raila Odinga in the 2027 general polls.

But ODM has already said that it will field the candidate in 2027. However, it is unclear whether the candidate will vie under the Party’s ticket or support President William Ruto’s re-election plan under the broad-based deal.

“The era of ODM being left out of government is over. We have been in the trenches for too long. Now it is time to lead from within,” he said.

The National Assembly minority leader, while he did not explicitly confirm any ongoing negotiations with Ruto, his comments suggest that ODM is already laying the groundwork for potential coalitions.

This is even as Raila maintains that the pact with UDA will end in 2027.

“Politics is about interests. Our interest is to serve Kenyans effectively, and to do that, you must be in government,” Junet stated.

The MP also urged party supporters to remain united and vigilant, saying the next few months would be critical in shaping ODM’s political future.

“We are not waiting for power to come to us, we are going to where power is,” he asserted.

TIFA survey

To add, a majority of Kenyans believe Raila will support Ruto in his bid to retain the presidency in the 2027 elections, according to TIFA polls.

The data suggests Raila’s political capital remains pivotal in shaping Kenya’s next election, with 32 per cent believing he will support the incumbent.

For their part, nearly half of those opposed to the BBG believe he will have rejoined the opposition by 2027, whether or not he actually contests the presidency yet again (20% + 26% = 46%), the survey reads.

“Another issue about which expectations are clearly influenced by attitudes towards the BBG is that of Raila Odinga’s expected political position in 2027, with almost twice as many who support it expecting that he will back Ruto’s re-election as compared with those who oppose it (46% vs. 28%),” the poll reads.
