Bruno Guimaraes celebrates first Arsenal goal despite difficult start in London

Bruno Guimarães could not hide his delight after scoring his first Arsenal goal in style as the Gunners edged Sunderland 2–0 at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
Making a rare league start since his summer switch to London, the former Newcastle United midfielder received a hostile reception, with every touch eliciting boos from the home faithful. He had the last laugh, however, crashing a stunning strike in off the underside of the crossbar from outside the penalty area.
Booed before opening the scoring
The opener added salt to Sunderland’s wounds, coming just 121 seconds after custodian David Raya saved Enzo Le Fée’s penalty.
“It is unbelievable. I feel very good,” said the midfielder, who marked the strike with a subtle hand gesture in celebration. “Everyone knows I had a difficult start with injuries, but I am glad to be back playing.
“I scored a beautiful goal. It is a beautiful moment for me and my family, and I am very happy. A beautiful goal in a very good place. Everyone knows my past. I had an amazing history at Newcastle, but now I am trying to create a new history here, and I have started the right way.”
Arteta laments over penalty
Despite the comfortable scoreline sealed after Bukayo Saka converted a penalty late on, Mikel Arteta remained deeply unhappy with the first penalty decision awarded to the home team.
The Spaniard argued that the call had threatened to change the course of the contest.
“The first question we have to discuss is this,” he said at the start of his press conference. “This is not acceptable at this level.
“It was a beautiful game of football with two teams, with an atmosphere in the stadium that was unbelievable.
Arsenal maintains league cruise
The victory—Arsenal’s fourth in a row in the Premier League and sixth across all competitions—maintains their strong start to the campaign and puts the champions three points clear of Manchester City, who face Manchester United on Sunday, September 13, 2026.
