Gachagua explains how Ruto is fueling ‘Wantam’ movement unknowingly

The Democracy for Citizens Party Leader, Rigathi Gachagua, has said Ruto is unknowingly fueling the ‘Wantam’ Movement, which aims to make Ruto a one-term president in the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a one-month tour in the US on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Gachagua explained that President William Ruto’s public utterances and alleged links to extrajudicial killings have damaged his image.
He added that Ruto’s failed economic promises have made him a rallying symbol of rejection among Kenyans from all walks of life.
According to Gachagua, the movement to send Ruto home after only one term has taken over nearly every social space, with Kenyans discussing his presidency in matatus, Ubers, pubs, churches, and markets, often with emotions of betrayal, loss, and anger.
“There is no way we can vote for you. You are the reason the Wantam Movement is like a religious movement in Kenya. Wherever two or three are gathered, that is the discussion,” he said.
Blood of children
Gachagua repeated claims that Ruto has publicly confessed to having a hand in violent crackdowns on protesting youth and has not shown remorse, something that, in his view, has irreversibly damaged his standing with citizens.
He said the president’s hands are “carrying the blood of our children” and warned that no matter how many development projects are promised, Kenyans will not forget or forgive what has already happened.
Gachagua also criticised the state of the economy under Ruto, pointing to ballooning pending bills, looting of public funds, and collapsed county operations as proof that the administration has lost control.
The DCP leader ended by urging Kenyans to remain strong and vote decisively in the next general election, adding that it is the only peaceful way left to remove a president who is no longer pretending to listen or care.
By the time of writing this story, nobody, including President William Ruto or his office, had responded to the claims made by Rigathi Gachagua about the extrajudicial killings, hailing economy among others.
