Gachagua sheds light on the role Uhuru will play in their opposition coalition

During an interview with a vernacular radio station from the Kisii region on Monday, May 12, 2025, former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua explained the role former President Uhuru Kenyatta will play in the emerging opposition coalition.
The coalition, which is expected to bring together Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, DAP-K Eugene Wamalwa, PLP leader Martha Karua, and other like-minded leaders, is aiming to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.
Gachagua said Uhuru Kenyatta is a respected elder and retired head of state whose advice will be sought in critical moments. He emphasised that Uhuru would not be involved in day-to-day politics, but his counsel would be available when needed.
“Uhuru Kenyatta is our elder, a retired president, and we respect him. When we require his advice, he is available—and that is all we need from him,” Gachagua said.
He added that Uhuru remains an influential leader with a strong following and should be allowed to determine how he wants to exert that influence.
Gachagua said the opposition does not wish to drag the former president into the murky waters of active politics, choosing instead to consult him selectively.
Gachagua went further to reaffirm his recent stance, stating that he will not tolerate anyone insulting or disrespecting the former president. He insisted that Uhuru should be allowed to retire in peace and enjoy time with his family.
Gachagua’s message to Ruto
Speaking from his Wamunyoro residence on Sunday, May 5, 2025, Gachagua openly criticised those attacking Kenyatta through proxies.
He called out President Ruto and his allies, including Farouk Kibet and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, urging them to confront Uhuru directly if they have issues with him.
“I will not allow you to insult our leader again,” Gachagua warned. “If you continue, don’t ever think of stepping on Mount Kenya.”
Gachagua party launch

Gachagua also used the opportunity to hint at the launch of his new political party later in the week.
He revealed that he would unveil the party’s name and key details but declined to give more information, and that the primary focus of his party will be uniting the Mount Kenya region after being betrayed by Ruto whom they overwhelmingly voted to install as the president
He added that each principal in the coalition would have their political vehicle so that they could join hands in sending Ruto home.
