Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that President William Ruto made between Ksh3 trillion and Ksh4 trillion in the last two years alone.

In a live interview at his Wamunyoro residence with media personality Oga Obinna in Nyeri on Friday, May 16, 2025, Gachagua claimed that Ruto’s main aim was to be rich and that he had achieved that end.

“He wanted to be president to become rich, and he is rich, filthy rich. In the last two years, in my estimation, when I look around, he must have made Ksh3-4 trillion,” Gachagua stated.

“I think that was his dream. I don’t think he cares for this country. I am not sure anymore if he cares because when people are making noise, he is not interested; people are raising issues, and he doesn’t bother. But he is rich; that he has achieved.”

He equally said during the interview that the president was closely monitoring some of the richest people in the country and inquiring how they get their money.

“The Financial Reporting Centre (FRC) reports to the president directly. He is monitoring the money for everybody in Kenya. He wants to know who has money and who doesn’t have it, and he wants to know who is having more money than him and where they are getting it from,” Gachagua noted.

Gachagua and Ruto are no strangers to the war of figures, which they have thrown at each other in live TV interviews.

War of figures

On February 3, 2025, in an interview with vernacular radio stations, Gachagua claimed that Ruto had offered him Ksh2 billion to resign and avoid being impeached, but he declined the offer.

“The President asked me to step down, promising Ksh2 billion to retire comfortably, with proper security and remuneration. He suggested that I could consider running for political office in the future,” Gachagua told the journalists.

The claims were, however, refuted by Ruto in subsequent interviews, where the president equally claimed that Gachagua had threatened to make him a one-term president if he failed to offer him Ksh10 billion to calm the restive Mount Kenya region.

”Gachagua told me that I would be a one-term president if I did not meet certain conditions. He asked for Ksh10 billion to talk to the Mt Kenya region,” Ruto claimed on March 31, 2025, while on a tour of the Mount Kenya region.

“I told him I would not do it. I told him if it’s one term, it’s okay if you’re the one to decide. So, the MPs started a war.”
