Police in Samburu County are holding three suspects for the offence of trafficking marijuana popularly known as bhang.

In a statement on Tuesday, January 9, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspects were found trafficking 196 kilograms of bhang concealed beneath sacks of beans at Archers Post within Samburu County on Monday night.

The drugs were discovered by a police dog.

“After a thorough search, 66 bales of bhang estimated at a street value of Ksh5.9 million were confiscated and have since been secured as exhibits. The vehicle has also been detained pending further investigations,” DCI stated.

Those arrested include the driver of the trailer identified as Isaack Mohammed Bakacha, 34 and two other occupants, Harun Mohammed Galgalo and Ali Abdikadir Mohammed aged 20 and 22 respectively.

Police have heightened a crackdown on drug trafficking in recent months.

Last month, police in Isiolo arrested two suspects including Chari Ward MCA Golicha Meja after 57 stones of bhang were recovered stashed in their house.

DCI said the two were first flagged down within Isiolo town while driving a Toyota Land Cruiser by police from the Transnational Organized Crimes Unit and a multi-agency team.

Officers later proceeded to the MCA’s house at Kambi Garba Estate on the outskirts of Isiolo town where six gunny bags containing the prohibited herb were recovered.

“The exhibits were escorted to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters for further processing as the suspects underwent investigative interviewing,” DCI said.

In the same month, police in Kilifi nabbed 477 kilograms of bhang valued at Ksh14 million.

During the operation, police arrested two suspects identified as George Nitti and Raphael Mbithi, all aged 37.
