A 29-year-old woman has been arrested in Laikipia County after the body of her 66-year-old husband, identified as Jackson Mungai, was found buried beneath the floor of their bedroom, barely two months after the couple got married.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, Laikipia East Police Commander Daniel Kitavi said officers received a report of the murder before rushing to Mramati village, where the suspect led them to the couple’s house.

“This morning, we received a report that an elderly man had been killed in Mramati village. Police officers went to the scene and were led by the suspect, who is believed to have committed the murder,” Kitavi said.

He said the person of interest then directed detectives to the bedroom, where the deceased had been buried beneath the bed after the attack.

“She led us to the house where she assaulted him and buried him under the bed,” he added.

Kitavi further said detectives recovered two weapons believed to have been used during the attack before exhuming the body.

“We recovered a machete and a metal rod used to strike him. We have since exhumed the body and taken it to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination,” he said.

The incident occurred in Nyakumu area, Segera Ward, Laikipia North, where Mungai is believed to have been killed late last week before his body was buried inside the couple’s house.

According to investigators, the case came to light after relatives and friends of the deceased became suspicious when the woman began selling some of the couple’s property shortly after Mungai disappeared.

They reported the matter to the police, leading to the woman’s arrest.

Residents recount what they know

The incident has left residents of Nyakumu in shock, with neighbours saying the couple had lived together for only a short period before the tragedy unfolded.

One resident claimed the two had disagreed inside their home before the situation turned violent.

“He had recently brought his wife to live with him. They had been together for a short time, and after a disagreement in the house, the woman picked up a metal bar and struck the old man on the head,” the resident said.

The resident further claimed that after the man died, his body was buried inside the bedroom in an attempt to conceal the crime.

“After he passed away, she buried him under the bed and covered the place with soil, making it appear as though nothing had happened,” the resident added.

The suspect remains in police custody as detectives continue with investigations ahead of her expected arraignment in court.
