Love of Your Life review: A journey through grief, love and starting over

Love of Your Life is a 2026 romantic drama that follows Maya, a nurse whose life changes after losing her husband, Charlie. The film explores love, grief, loneliness and the difficult process of starting again after losing someone close.
Rather than telling a simple love story, the film spends much of its time showing what happens when a person has to build a new life after the relationship they depended on suddenly ends. Maya’s journey takes her from Boston to different parts of Europe and eventually Japan as she tries to understand who she is outside the life she had with Charlie.
Maya and Charlie’s love story
At the beginning, Maya’s life appears to be heading in a familiar direction. She meets Charlie and the two develop a relationship that eventually leads to marriage. For Maya, Charlie becomes more than just a partner. He becomes part of the future she has imagined for herself.
That future, however, does not last.
Charlie dies around the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving Maya struggling to deal with a loss she was not prepared for. His death becomes the turning point of the film.

Instead of immediately trying to find another relationship, Maya first has to deal with the emptiness left behind.
Leaving home to find herself
Maya eventually leaves her familiar surroundings and begins travelling.
Her journey takes her through places including Portugal, England and Japan. Each location gives her a different experience and allows her to step away from the life she knew with Charlie.
The travelling is not simply about seeing new places. It becomes part of Maya’s attempt to understand what she wants from life.
She meets new people and experiences situations that challenge the way she thinks about love. For the first time in a long while, Maya has to make decisions based on what she wants rather than what she and Charlie had planned together.
Felix brings love back into her life
During her journey, Maya meets Felix.
Felix is different from Charlie, and their relationship does not simply replace the marriage Maya lost. Instead, Felix helps her realise that she is still capable of opening herself up to another person.
This creates one of the film’s biggest questions: can someone love again without feeling as though they are betraying the person they lost?

Maya’s feelings for Felix bring excitement back into her life, but they also force her to confront the grief she has been carrying.
Her new relationship therefore becomes part of a bigger journey towards accepting that her life can continue, even though it will never be exactly as she first imagined.
More than a romantic story
One of the film’s stronger ideas is that love is not limited to romantic relationships.
Maya’s journey also involves friendship, family, memories, and learning to live with loss. Her relationship with Charlie remains important even after his death because his memory continues to influence the choices she makes.
The film takes its time showing Maya change rather than simply presenting her as someone who suddenly gets over her grief. That makes her journey easier to understand. Losing someone does not have a fixed timetable, and finding happiness again does not erase the pain that came before it.
Love of Your Life is a gentle romantic drama that puts grief alongside the possibility of new love.
The film works best when it focuses on Maya’s emotional journey and the question of how a person starts again after losing the future they expected. The different locations also give the story a sense of movement as Maya slowly moves away from the life she once knew.
