Weather update: Parts of Kenya to receive rains, thunderstorms as strong winds sweep Northern regions on Monday, September 28

Residents in parts of the Coast, Western Kenya, and the Lake Victoria Basin should prepare for light rainfall and intermittent thunderstorms on Monday, September 28, 2026.
According to the daily forecast issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department, rainfall is to be expected over few places across Kakamega, Kisumu, Kericho, Siaya, Busia, Bungoma, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Taita Taveta and Lamu counties.
Coastal counties including Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu will experience morning light showers over a few areas before clearing into sunny intervals in the afternoon.
Mombasa will record daytime highs of 29°C and nighttime lows of 23°C, while Lamu will reach a maximum of 30°C. Taita Taveta is likely to see morning light rains followed by afternoon showers, with temperatures peaking at 30°C.
In the Western region and Lake Victoria Basin, bright morning skies will give way to localised wet weather. Kakamega, Busia, and Bungoma will experience light showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, with Kakamega and Busia reaching maximum temperatures of 30°C and 31°C respectively.
Kisumu and Siaya will see early morning light rains before sunny conditions return, with Kisumu hitting a high of 32°C. Kericho will stay calm through the morning, followed by afternoon showers and thunderstorms alongside a daytime maximum of 26°C.
Strong winds in the North and mild Central weather
Northern Kenya will stay mostly hot and dry, but residents should brace for gusty atmospheric conditions.
The met department warned that “strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit and Isiolo Counties.”
Mandera and Turkana will register the highest temperatures across the country, climbing to maximums of 37°C, while Wajir will hit 35°C and Garissa 33°C.
Nairobi and the Central Highlands will enjoy mild daytime conditions. Nairobi residents will wake up to cloudy morning skies before experiencing sunny intervals during the day, with temperatures ranging between a minimum of 15°C and a maximum of 27°C.
Counties like Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, and Kirinyaga will follow a similar pattern of morning clouds and sunny afternoons.
Chilly temperatures
Nighttime temperatures will drop sharply in Nyandarua County, which is expected to record the lowest minimum temperature in the country at 5°C alongside daytime highs of 24°C.
Eldoret in Uasin Gishu County will see daytime temperatures reach 26°C after an overnight low of 11°C.
The forecast remains valid from 9.00 pm on September 27, 2026, to 9.00 pm on September 28, 2026, giving Kenyans a clear look at what to expect as they begin their day.
