DCI detectives nab 4 over Ksh40M fake TSC recruitment scam

Four people have been arrested in Bomet County in connection with a massive fake Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recruitment scam that defrauded unsuspecting job seekers of more than Ksh40 million.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), detectives attached to the TSC conducted an extensive investigation that led to the arrest of the persons of interest believed to be behind a sophisticated scheme involving forged TSC appointment letters.

In a statement on Friday, January 9, 2026, the DCI explained that the scheme targeted unemployed teachers and desperate job seekers, demanding large sums of money in exchange for fake appointment letters that promised permanent and pensionable employment with the TSC.

“Many victims reportedly took loans, sold property, or exhausted their savings in pursuit of the promised jobs,” the statement read in part.

“The fraud network is believed to extend beyond Bomet County to Kericho, Narok, Kisii, and Nyamira, and efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest additional suspects linked to the syndicate.”

Further, the DCI has revealed that it is working closely with the TSC, reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling criminal networks that exploit job seekers and undermine public trust in government institutions.

The agency has also warned members of the public to remain vigilant and to verify all recruitment opportunities through official TSC channels, emphasising that the commission does not charge any fees for employment.

Members of the public who may have fallen victim to the scam and have not yet reported it are urged to come forward.

Fake police recruitment letters

This comes a few months after DCI detectives nabbed a man linked to fake police recruitment letters conning victims out of up to Ksh2.5 million.

In a post on the official X account on Saturday, November 22, 2025, the Kilimani Detectives confirmed that at least three individuals had reported the man, with each narrating separate incidents of conning.

The detectives further confirmed that the key person of interest had pocketed at least Ksh2.5 million in a daring police recruitment scam that preyed on desperate job seekers.

“Kilimani detectives have arrested a smooth-talking con artist who pocketed Sh2.5 million in a daring police recruitment scam that preyed on desperate job seekers,” DCI confirmed.

According to the detectives, the key person of interest was pounced on with forged recruitment letters.

They also confirmed that the man convinced the victims to part with hefty sums of money, assuring them that their slots were secured in the service.

“Armed with forged recruitment letters, he convinced the victims to part with hefty sums of money, assuring them that their slots were secured in the service. By the time reality finally kicked in, a total of Ksh2.5 million had changed hands, and the dreams of joining the service had vanished,” DCI said.
