DPP seeks to detain KDF imposter for 7 days

The Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) is seeking to detain one Joshua Mutui Muimi for posing as a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) brigadier to enable them to complete investigations.
Appearing before Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, the prosecution wants the court to grant them seven days to detain the respondent (Mutui).
According to the prosecution, Mutui was arrested on Monday, November 17, 2025, at 19:40 hours while he was in a furnished apartment in Kilimani within Nairobi County, where he was purporting to be a member of the KDF in the rank of brigadier.
Further, the State told the court that the respondent (Mutui) was issuing calling letters to unsuspecting members of the public, which indicates that they are supposed to report for training on November 17, 2025, in Eldoret.
“Your Honour, the respondent (Mutui) was issuing calling letters alleged to be from the Ministry of Defence to unsuspecting Kenyans, which required them to report to a recruitment training school in Eldoret on November 17, 2025,” the prosecution told the court.

Notably, the court was informed that at the time of arrest, Mutui was found dressed in full Air Force military regalia with a name tag of M.J. Muimi, a brigadier in rank, together with gorget patches.
Items recovered
The court also heard that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers who visited Mutui’s apartment conducted a search and found some documents with the KDF logo that included six admission letters to service bearing the defence ministry name, among other things.

“Your Honour, the applicant recovered documents, a logo and name of the ministry and six admission letters, seven calling letters bearing the same serial number, seven fingerprint forms, and a KCSE certificate suspected to belong to one of the victims and a motor vehicle,” the prosecution told the court.
In its quest to have the court detain the respondent for seven days, the prosecution told the court that the respondent’s (Mutui) permanent and fixed abode is unknown since he said he had rented the apartment for a short period.
In addition, the DPP told the court that he is a flight risk.
Magistrate Onyina is set to rule on the prosecution application later in the day.
