Why June is the best month for a road trip

The long rains are done. The sky has cleared. The landscapes are green, the temperatures are bearable, and the roads are yours. Late June is one of the best times to drive in Kenya, and most people are still sitting at home.
Kenya’s main rainy season runs from March through May and clears up by mid-June. The relatively cool season, from late June to October, gets far less rain, which means drier tarmac, better visibility, and far fewer potholes eating into your tyres. Roads that were borderline unpassable in April are smooth sailing now.
The temperatures are also in your favour. Average temperatures in June range from 18 to 27°C, making it one of the better months weather-wise to be outdoors in Kenya. Early mornings on the road feel crisp without being cold.
The school calendar is your best friend right now
Here’s what most people miss: schools are still in session. Term two runs until July 31, 2026, with a half-term break from June 24 to June 28.

That half-term window aside, the highways are not yet choked with holiday traffic. The August rush, when families mob every lodge from Naivasha to Mombasa, is still weeks away. You get the landscapes without the crowds.
That matters both for your wallet and your sanity. Park entry queues are shorter, lodges have rooms available, and you’re not stuck behind a convoy of overladen matatus on the Narok road.
The routes worth taking this week
Nairobi to Naivasha is the obvious quick win. The 88-kilometre (55-mile) drive takes two to three hours and is at its best during the dry season from June to October, with panoramic Rift Valley views and flamingos at the lake. It’s a full weekend in one tank.

For something longer, the drive northwest from Nairobi through Nakuru and on to Kisumu rewards with tea-green hills around Kericho and Mau Forest before opening onto Lake Victoria.
The Nairobi to Maasai Mara route, roughly 270 kilometres via Narok, is also prime right now. June to October is the driest stretch of the year in the Mara, with low rainfall and comfortable daytime temperatures making it the top period for wildlife viewing.
