Kenya Railways outlines essential rail safety guidelines every commuter and pedestrian should know

On September 6, 2026, Kenya Railways published an educational video detailing essential safety practices for passengers, pedestrians, and motorists interacting with rail networks.
In the clip shared on X, representative Lawna Aliba Ang’asa cautions the public that personal awareness remains the primary defence against accidents near railway infrastructure.
Standing in front of an official information poster at a railway station, Ang’asa highlights specific daily habits needed to navigate train platforms and coaches safely.
“Any moment you’re near any rail tracks, at the railway station or onboard the train, it is paramount to realise that your safety is first priority and your own responsibility,” Ang’asa notes.
Commuters waiting on platforms must remain behind the designated yellow line at all times and avoid using headphones or ear pods. Once onboard, passengers are urged to avoid moving between coaches to prevent falls or injuries during movement.
Level crossings and photography rules
Safety guidelines extend beyond platforms to surrounding rail corridors and level crossings. “Always expect a train. When you see a track, think train. Trains can come from either direction,” Ang’asa explains.
Before crossing any track, pedestrians and motorists should stop, look, and listen. The update also addresses content creators and photographers who access active rail lines for photo shoots.
Ang’asa clarifies that taking photos or videos on train tracks is illegal and dangerous, adding, “Remember the only thing that belongs on the tracks is a train! Keep off the tracks.”
Members of the public are equally warned against throwing stones at passing trains as it is a safety hazard.
Institutional safety measures and reporting
Alongside public cooperation, Kenya Railways maintains structural safety measures across its network.
The corporation conducts regular maintenance on tracks, trains employees on first aid response, and carries out outreach visits to schools to educate young students on rail safety.
Furthermore, law enforcement agencies continue to arrest and prosecute individuals involved in vandalising railway property.
