How to block calls and messages from unsaved numbers on Android

Unwanted calls and messages from unfamiliar numbers can be frustrating, particularly when they come repeatedly or come from hidden numbers.

Open the Phone app

To block calls and messages from unsaved numbers, start by opening the Phone app on your Android device.

On supported phones, tap SIM and network settings, then select Data and security.

From there, look for the Harassment filter.

Turn on the blocking options

Under Harassment filter, look for the available call and message blocking options.

Turn on Block numbers not in contacts to block calls and messages from numbers that are not saved in your contacts.

You can also turn on Block hidden numbers to prevent calls from people who have hidden their phone numbers.

These options can be useful for people who regularly receive unwanted calls or messages from unfamiliar numbers.

However, users should be aware that blocking numbers not in their contacts could also prevent legitimate calls and messages from new numbers.

Settings vary by phone

The steps and names of these settings are not the same on every Android phone.

Google notes that Android settings can vary depending on the phone, while manufacturers such as Samsung provide their own blocking options.

If the Harassment filter option is not available on your phone, check the Phone app’s settings for options such as Blocked numbers, Block numbers or Caller ID & spam.

On phones using Google’s Phone app, open Phone, tap the three-dot menu, select Settings, then Blocked numbers. From there, users can turn on Unknown to block calls from private or unidentified numbers.

Samsung phones, meanwhile, may have a Block numbers option under Phone > More options > Settings, where users can enable blocking for calls from unknown numbers.

Check your phone’s settings

If you cannot find the exact options listed above, search through the Phone app settings or your device’s Settings app for terms such as blocked numbers, spam protection, unknown callers or harassment filter.

Android’s built-in number-blocking system supports blocking unwanted calls and texts, but manufacturers can add their own interfaces and advanced filtering features.

Before enabling a setting that blocks all numbers outside your contacts, make sure you are comfortable with potentially missing calls from new or unfamiliar numbers.
