The rise in spam calls has been linked to automated dialling systems and the increasing number of people sharing phone numbers online. Many users unknowingly expose their contacts when signing up for websites, competitions, or mobile applications. While some of these calls are simple marketing attempts, others are carefully designed to steal personal information or money.

According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), an independent U.S. government agency, scam callers often rely on pressure and urgency to manipulate victims into acting quickly without thinking carefully.

“Scam callers use fear, excitement, or urgency to get people to react before thinking carefully,” the FCC explained.

Simple settings that can reduce unwanted calls

Technology experts say one of the easiest ways to reduce spam calls is by activating call protection features already available on most smartphones. Android and iPhone devices both allow users to silence unknown callers, filter suspected spam numbers or send suspicious calls directly to voicemail.

If you receive calls that you suspect are not wanted, you can also stop interruptions by blocking the numbers. Most smartphones have a simple blocking option in the call log section. After blocking, the number won’t be able to call or message again.

Some mobile service providers also offer spam protection services that identify suspicious callers before the phone even rings. Trusted caller identification apps may also help users recognise possible scam calls by comparing numbers against spam databases.

However, experts advise downloading such apps only from official app stores to avoid privacy and security risks.

When to block, report, or ignore a caller

Ignoring suspicious calls may sometimes work better than answering them. Picking up spam calls can signal that the number is active, which may encourage more unwanted calls in the future.

If the call is important, the caller will usually leave a voicemail or send a text message.

People are also encouraged to avoid sharing phone numbers publicly on social media platforms or unsecured websites unless necessary. Publicly available contact information can easily end up in marketing or scam databases.

Spam text messages have also become increasingly common. Fake delivery updates, lottery notifications, and urgent banking alerts are often used to trick users into clicking harmful links or revealing sensitive information. Experts recommend deleting suspicious messages immediately and avoiding unknown links.

Although spam calls may never disappear completely, simple habits such as blocking suspicious numbers, adjusting phone settings, and staying cautious online can greatly reduce the problem and help users avoid unnecessary stress.
