Why you should always stay behind the yellow lines at SGR stations

If you have ever taken the SGR train between Nairobi and Mombasa, or dropped off family at an inter-county station, you have seen a bright yellow strip painted along the edge of station platforms.
While it might look like a simple line to keep crowd order, standing behind it does a lot more to keep you safe than you might think.
The physical force of a moving train
When a train glides into or passes through a station, it pushes a large block of air out of its path. As the train moves, the air rushing along its sides creates a sudden drop in air pressure.
This pressure difference produces a pulling force toward the tracks. For anyone standing too close to the edge, that sudden rush of wind can easily throw you off balance, grab loose clothes, or pull light bags toward the train.

Stepping back behind the yellow line gives you a safe space away from this rush of wind. It also gives platform staff and train drivers a clear line of sight down the station, making sure everyone stays safe before the train stops completely.
How bright markings help us build safe habits
Beyond protecting passengers from wind pull, bright platform lines work as visual markers that guide our actions without us even thinking about it. When combined with raised tactile tiles underfoot, the yellow strip gives your feet an instant warning that you are stepping too close to the edge.

Science backs up why these simple markers work.
A study on train platform safety published in Applied Sciences investigated how visual lines guide passenger actions and found that “the greater the width of the yellow safety line at the edge of the platform, the greater the level of compliance that was achieved.”
The researchers observed that clear, visible lines naturally prompt people to stand back without needing constant warnings from security officers.
Holding back until the train comes to a complete standstill keeps your journey smooth, comfortable, and safe.
