Meanwhile, the occasion for the Arsenal fixture was arrived at because it is the closest home game to the anniversary of Albion’s first-ever competitive match, which took place on September 21, 1901.

Speaking after the sensational win, Fabian Hurzeler, the Brighton coach, expressed his delight, describing the performance as a special feat against the Champions and the best club in England.

“Beating the current champions and the best team in England is something special. But it is not because the result is special, it is the performance. The boys showed real togetherness and intensity.
“They were horrible to play against today, and that’s because we did the basic things right. Overall I was very pleased with the performance.
“I think we deserved to win. It’s a moment the players and the staff can enjoy because they worked hard for this, but it’s also important why we had this success today, because we did the basics right and we were brilliant in the duels,” he explained.
The win saw the club climb to third on the log behind Arsenal, who have 12 point the same as leaders Manchester City.
