Kenya Railways has issued a safety warning to pedestrians, motorists, and commuters living or moving near train lines across the country. Through a public campaign posted on its official social media channels, the state rail operator reminded the public that “Rail safety starts with you.”

The company wants Kenyans to take personal responsibility whenever they are near train corridors to prevent avoidable accidents and protect lives.

Designated crossing points

Kenya Railways emphasised that daily choices made near railway lines make all the difference when it comes to personal safety. The operator urged everyone using these spaces to pay close attention to safety warnings and stay alert at all times.

Across many Kenyan towns and urban centres, railway tracks double as footpaths or illegal crossing points for people looking to save time. This widespread habit often poses serious hazards, particularly when pedestrians misjudge approaching trains’ speeds or walk while distracted.

Kenya Railways is tackling this problem by urging citizens to change how they interact with rail infrastructure.

In its official social media handles on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, Kenya Railways noted, “Every safe journey depends on the choices we make around railway lines. Always use designated crossing points, obey railway signs and signals & look both ways before crossing.”

The company asked people to “Ensure to look both ways for oncoming trains before crossing.” It further instructed the public to “Always use authorized railway crossing points” and “Obey all signs and signals” when crossing the tracks safely.

Tracks are for trains only

Another critical issue driving the campaign is the misconception that trains can stop quickly. Many motorists and pedestrians attempt to beat oncoming trains at level crossings, underestimating both the locomotive’s speed and its massive weight.

Because a fully loaded train requires significant distance to come to a complete halt, trying to dash across the tracks often turns fatal.

Kenya Railways cautioned against taking unnecessary chances near moving locomotives, warning, “Remember, railway tracks are for trains only never attempt to outrun or cross in front of an approaching train.”

Following these rules helps keep commuters, drivers, and local communities safe along train lines nationwide, ensuring that everyday travel across the country remains uninterrupted.
