Sam Atandi reveals why he eats brown ugali twice a week

Sam Atandi, Member of Parliament (MP) for Alego Usonga, has revealed details about his strict eating habits, explaining why he only eats brown ugali twice a week as part of his disciplined lifestyle routine.
Speaking about his diet, in a candid conversation with Oga Obinna on Monday, May 18, 2026, the lawmaker said he completely avoids sugar and foods made from wheat, including mandazi, cakes and chapati.
According to Atandi, people should only consume food depending on the kind of energy they need daily.
“I do not eat sugar, anything wheat, mandazi, cake, or chapati. Carbs, I eat just a few: brown ugali twice a week. You do not need too much energy. When you eat all those stuffs where do you want to take the energy? You eat for a purpose; you eat what is good for your body,” Atandi disclosed.

“I have built enough energy when I eat ugali twice a week, and that is sufficient energy.”
The MP explained that since most of his work revolves around office meetings and not physical labour, he does not require too much energy from carbohydrates.
Atandi further noted that excess unused energy eventually turns into fat, which is why he prefers reducing carbohydrates and sugar intake.
“I am not going to the farm; I am not running. I am just in the office and just have meetings here and there, so you do not need a lot of energy; otherwise you will start adding weight because the energy that you have not utilised will be converted into fat,” he explained.
The legislator also advised people struggling with weight gain to consider cutting down on sugar.
“For those struggling with weight, the best thing they should do is just cut those sugars, and the weight will just go,” he advised.

Food routine
In addition, the lawmaker also shared his daily food routine, revealing that he starts his mornings with four boiled eggs, black tea without sugar and fruits.
“I normally have a light breakfast, only four boiled eggs with black tea with no sugar and some fruits every morning,” he shared.
For lunch and dinner, the MP said he prefers protein-rich meals such as fish, beef or chicken accompanied by vegetables while avoiding starch completely.
“I eat a very good lunch; I eat a lot of meat. My food is either fish, beef or chicken and vegetables. The only thing that I do not eat is carbs; sometimes I eat a full chicken at lunchtime without ugali with vegetables only because you have to eat until you are full because I need more protein than starch,” Atandi disclosed.
He also noted that he prefers eating dinner at home between 6pm and 7pm because the food is prepared exactly the way he wants it.
“I eat dinner between 6pm and 7pm at home. Eating at home is the best because the food is prepared in the manner that I want”, he added.
