Russian attack damages Chornomorets Stadium ahead of Ukrainian Premier League match

A Russian strike on Friday, August 7, 2026, damaged Chornomorets Stadium in Odesa, leaving one person injured just a day before the venue was due to host a Ukrainian Premier League fixture.
The attack hit the 34,000-capacity stadium, causing significant damage to parts of the ground, including the roof, windows and spectator stands, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
Odesa regional governor Oleh Kiper said a 29-year-old woman suffered shrapnel injuries in the incident. Emergency teams remained at the scene as authorities worked to establish the full scale of the destruction.
The timing of the attack has raised immediate concerns over the scheduled league encounter between Chornomorets and Kolos.
The two sides are due to face each other at Chornomorets Stadium on Saturday in the second round of the Ukrainian Premier League campaign.
However, with the stadium sustaining damage in the strike, uncertainty now surrounds the fixture. No decision had been announced regarding a postponement or cancellation at the time of reporting.
Officials are expected to assess the condition of the stadium before determining whether it will be safe and suitable to host the match.
Russian attack kills 21
This comes as Russia has attacked Ukraine with ballistic missiles and drones, killing at least 21 people earlier in the week, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said more missile interceptors “could have saved lives”.
Kyiv and the surrounding region experienced the deadliest strikes it had seen this year overnight, with 17 people reported dead. Attacks in Kharkiv and Donetsk also killed one and three people respectively.
Zelensky said Ukraine had repeatedly asked its allies for more US-made Patriot missile interceptors to defend against Russian ballistic missiles but no missiles were reported intercepted during the overnight attack.
He said delays in receiving anti-ballistic systems from partners had resulted in “horrific casualties and destruction”.
In response, Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had struck logistics hubs and supply centres in Kyiv and the surrounding region.
“These centres were involved in the storage, delivery of various weapons and military supplies, as well as in the production and distribution of unmanned aerial vehicles,” it said.
The ministry also said three cargo vessels near the Black Sea port of Odesa had been hit because they were “transporting weapons and military equipment”.
