Kenya’s Zak Vyner clocks 90 as Wrexham suffer narrow Carabao Cup defeat to Middlesbrough

Kenya’s Harambee Stars defender Zak Vyner played full 90 minutes as Wrexham’s return to competitive football ended in disappointment as they were beaten 1-0 by Middlesbrough in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
Will Lankshear scored the decisive goal shortly after the hour mark to send Middlesbrough through to the second round, leaving Vyner and his Wrexham club facing an early exit from the competition.
The defeat was Wrexham’s first competitive outing ahead of their debut season in the Championship, with manager Phil Parkinson using the fixture to give some of his new players an opportunity to settle into the team.
Danny Imray made his competitive debut after joining Wrexham during the summer, while Ben Whiteman was also handed his first appearance for the club after coming on as a second-half substitute.
Wrexham started brightly and created several promising openings during an entertaining first half.
Callum Doyle was heavily involved in the early attacking moves, with his low cross in the third minute almost producing the opening goal after Ollie Rathbone stretched to reach it inside the Middlesbrough penalty area.
Middlesbrough responded four minutes later when Max Arfsten picked out Adilson Malanda, but Wrexham goalkeeper Danny Ward produced an excellent reaction save from close range.
Imray then came close to marking his debut with a goal when Doyle again provided the delivery, although the wing-back was unable to make the necessary contact at the back post.
Both teams continued to threaten as the first half progressed. Nathan Broadhead was particularly lively for Wrexham, creating opportunities with his movement and driving runs.
In the 38th minute, Broadhead found George Smith following a diagonal run, but Sol Brynn saved the striker’s effort with his legs. Thomason then fired the rebound over the crossbar.
Broadhead was involved again moments later when he beat his marker inside the box, although Rathbone’s effort from the resulting loose ball went narrowly wide.
Middlesbrough also had chances before the break, with Lankshear heading over from Callum Brittain’s cross.
Wrexham continued to search for the breakthrough after half-time, but it was Middlesbrough who eventually found the decisive goal.

The hosts took the lead shortly after the hour mark when Lankshear produced an impressive finish, acrobatically volleying the ball into the far corner after a headed cross was returned into his path.
Wrexham attempted to respond immediately. Lewis O’Brien won a free-kick around 20 yards from goal, but Broadhead’s effort sailed over the crossbar.
Parkinson subsequently turned to his substitutes in an attempt to change the game, bringing on Ryan Longman before introducing Whiteman, Kieffer Moore and Bailey Cadamarteri.
Wrexham continued pushing for an equaliser, with Zak Vyner delivering an excellent cross-field pass to Smith, whose left-footed volley went narrowly wide.
O’Brien also saw an effort deflected wide in the closing stages, while Middlesbrough came close to adding a second when Morgan Whittaker struck the near post in the 86th minute.
The hosts ultimately held on to their advantage and secured progression to the second round.
For Wrexham, attention now shifts to the Championship, with Parkinson’s side set to begin their league campaign away to Cardiff City in ten days.
The Carabao Cup defeat therefore provides Wrexham with an early reminder of the demands that await them as they step up to Championship football, but the performances of players such as Doyle, Broadhead and debutant Imray offered some positives despite the result.
