Paying Ksh25,000 for a clean refurbished computer makes sense when a brand-new one costs double. However, with the National Environment Management Authority moving to enforce strict e-waste import controls, buyers must learn how to spot bad hardware before handing over cash.

Running a quick five-minute diagnostic check on the spot keeps you from walking home with a broken machine.

Simple checks to run before paying

Start with battery health. On a Windows computer, search for Command Prompt and type the battery report command to compare current capacity against original design levels.

On a MacBook, open System Settings to check total cycle counts. A battery holding less than seventy per cent of its original capacity will force you to sit next to a power outlet all day or pay for an early replacement.

Next, test every key on the keyboard. Open a blank text document and press every single key, including backspace, spacebar, and top function buttons.

Keys that stick, double-type, or fail to respond often point to hidden liquid spills or worn mechanical switches that software updates cannot repair.

Finally, listen to the cooling fan. Open multiple browser tabs and stream a video at the same time. A healthy fan hums softly, but loud grinding sounds or strong heat at the bottom signal blocked vents, dry cooling paste, or fan failure.
