Mourinho, Klopp comments resurface after Man City verdict

Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp could have their previous remarks about Manchester City’s Premier League titles back in the spotlight following the latest verdict in the club’s financial case.
Manchester City were found guilty of all but one of the Premier League charges brought against them in a ruling announced on Friday, September 25, 2026.
The outcome has raised questions over what sanctions the club could eventually face, with possible punishments including a points deduction or relegation. City have consistently denied the allegations and are expected to appeal the decision.
The Premier League investigation relates to alleged breaches covering the period between 2009 and 2018.
City won three league titles during that period, lifting the trophy in 2012, 2014 and 2018.
Their 2018 triumph was particularly notable as Pep Guardiola’s side finished the campaign with a record 100 points, 19 ahead of second-placed Manchester United.
Mourinho was United manager at the time and has previously suggested that he could still benefit if City were stripped of titles as a result of the case.
Mourinho’s comments
Speaking in October 2024, Mourinho recalled United’s achievements during his time at Old Trafford.
“As you know, we won the Europa League [in 2017] and we finished second in the Premier League [in 2018],” he said.
Mourinho then joked about the possibility of being awarded another league title if City were punished.
“I think we still have a chance to win that league because maybe they punish Man City with points and maybe we win that league and then they have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal.”
Klopp has also previously made light of the possibility of Liverpool gaining additional Premier League titles.
Liverpool finished runners-up to City in 2019 and 2022, although both campaigns came after the period covered by the alleged financial breaches.
During a Q&A session with comedian John Bishop, Klopp was told that he could potentially leave Liverpool having won the Premier League once, but that a court ruling could change that figure.
Klopp’s response
The former Liverpool manager responded with a joke about celebrating the titles.
“If you organise a bus parade, I’m in! How long it takes I don’t care.”
Despite the comments, any decision to redistribute titles would depend on the eventual sanctions and the rules governing the case. Liverpool’s two second-place finishes in 2019 and 2022 occurred outside the 2009-2018 period at the centre of the financial allegations.
The investigation followed the publication of leaked Manchester City financial documents by German publication Der Spiegel in November 2018.
The charges initially numbered 115 before being expanded to 130. They cover allegations concerning financial reporting, player and managerial payments, UEFA financial regulations, Premier League profitability and sustainability rules, as well as cooperation with the league’s investigation.
City have maintained their position that they did not breach the rules and are expected to challenge the verdict through the appeal process.
