Shakib Cham says Nadia Mukami and Tanasha Donna are only Kenyan female artistes he knows

Ugandan boxer and businessman Shakib Cham has responded after facing backlash from Kenyans over remarks he made about the country’s female music industry.
Shakib found himself at the centre of online criticism after stating that he had never heard of any Kenyan female artiste, a comment that many Kenyans interpreted as dismissive of the country’s music scene.
In his earlier remarks, shared on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Shakib said that most females in Kenya in the entertainment industry are dancers.
“Never heard of any female artist in Kenya, though. Most of the females are dancers, maybe,” Shakib said.
The statement quickly sparked debate across social media, with many Kenyans pointing out several successful female musicians, including award-winning artistes who have built careers both locally and internationally.
Following a day of criticism, Shakib, on Thursday, July 23, 2026, returned to social media to clarify his comments, admitting that there are at least two Kenyan female artistes he is familiar with.
“After telling Kenyans that I have never heard any of their female artists in their country, they have spent a day roasting me. OK, maybe I only know Nadia Mukami and Tanasha Dona. Only those! So calm down, guys,” he said.
His latest statement appears to be an attempt to ease tensions after the backlash, although it is unclear whether it has convinced his critics.
Many social media users continued to react to his remarks, with some arguing that Kenya has produced several talented female musicians who deserve regional recognition.

Nadia Mukami is among Kenya’s most successful contemporary musicians, known for hit songs such as Radio Love, Maombi and Wangu. She has won multiple awards and collaborated with several East African artistes.
Tanasha Donna, on the other hand, is a singer, songwriter and media personality whose music has gained popularity across the region. She has released songs including Gere and Ride and has collaborated with various artistes.
While Shakib Cham has now acknowledged knowing Nadia Mukami and Tanasha Donna, his initial comments continue to generate mixed reactions online, with many Kenyans insisting that the country boasts a rich pool of female musical talent that deserves wider recognition across East Africa.
